The holy Ramadan is the name given to one of the lunar months. Being an Arabic word, Ramadan means “getting sunburned by walking barefoot under the sun”. Accordingly, the reason why this month is called Ramadan is that the Muslim who fasts in this month suffers from hunger and thirst and this
anguished worship is rewarded with its similar and that person is sanctified by burning and his/her heart is freed from human passions. Ramadan is the sultan of months because Allah, who creates holy places among places, holy people among people and holy times among times, predestinated these days to the servants so that they take share in his mercy, forgiveness and blessing.
Ramadan is fixed upon the appearance of Ramadan crescent after sunset. The following three physical and financial worships are remembered when it comes to Ramadan: fasting in the daytime, tarawih prayer in the nighttime and, as the biggest social assistance, alms and sadaka-i fıtır. None of the months except for Ramadan is mentioned in the Qur’an. This honor is done only to Ramadan. Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting... Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties (al-Baqara 185)
Ramadan is the month of fasting. The benefits of fasting are beyond measure. This great worship softens hearts and glorifies feelings and impedes the depravedness of the flesh. It leads people to think about and understand and help to hungry, poor, sick and helpless people and is influential on the direction of hearts to the Creator. Fasting is necessary for physical and mental health and the evolution of faith and will so much as yearly pruning is necessary for the growth of trees and orchards.
Fasting does not only mean depriving the stomach of food. Because our prophet (peace be upon him) said ‘There are many fasting people; they get away only with the hunger and thirst of their fasting’’. The person who is fasting should make his/her entire body to fast. The fast of hands is not to touch the forbidden. The fast of feet is not to go to the forbidden. The fast of eyes is not to look at the forbidden. The fast of ears is not to listen to the forbidden. The fast of the tongue is not to say a bad word. A person eliminates his/her animal feelings, purifies his/her spirit and is defined by the attributes of angels only with fasting.
Our prophet (peace be upon him) said ‘The one who is fasting should not tell a bad word. If someone curses or takes a swipe at him/her, he/she should say that he/she is fasting.”
Allah predestine all of us to fast by fulfilling the conditions like our elders did and to experience more Ramadan months and know, hear, taste and perceive the following year better than the past year (amen).
